The Use of Skin Seeds in
Covering of Raw Areas (New Technique)
Mohamed Samir A. Ahdel-Rheem
Damanhour Teaching Hospital, Damanhour ,Egypt
When
we use thiersh graft to cover raw areas after burns, large pieces of skin are
taken from thigh, under general anesthesia, Sometimes blood transfusion may be
needed and the left raw area heals usually after long time leaving ugly
discolored skin.
Sometimes when raw areas are wide or involve thighs, thiersh grafts are unavailable and skin culture may be used which needs
special technique and has some problems. In this new technique I used what we
can call "skin seeds".
The process is very easy, local anaesthesia is given to any available area of
skin and by scalpel small pieces of split skin are taken (5x5rmm), another layer
can be taken from the same region then the donor site is sutured without leaving
raw area, the skin seeds are distributed on raw area like islands to grow in all
directions. These seeds are treated like usual thiersh graft. This new method
gives us many advantages to donor site, which will be sutured and turned to
line, also any donor site can be used. The study was done on 10 patients with
variable raw areas after burns. The donor site heals within 7 days. The
recipient heal after a longer time than that when thiersh graft is used.
